The Healthiest Treats

Data show that dog owners frequently query Google with questions like, Can dogs eat blackberries? Can dogs eat bread? Can dogs have pistachios? It's tempting to give dogs leftovers and table scraps. While dogs can technically eat many people foods, there are some that are toxic, like chocolate, avocados, and onions.

For more details, review these lists from Healthline and the American Kennel Club. Note that many common additives, like salt, xylitol, and garlic, are toxic to dogs. Even "safe" foods may cause digestive upset. Many dogs in the U.S. are overweight, and human treats can contribute to weight gain. So, if you occasionally give your dog human foods, choose whole food options like eggs or bananas. Prepare them yourself to avoid seasonings and other additives.

You can also choose convenient treats made specifically for dogs. Ask your veterinarian for recommendations. Look for products with additional health benefits, like tartar prevention. Limit your dog’s treats to approximately 10% of calories, and dole them out in small servings, like a piece of kibble.

How To Reinforce Good Behavior with Treats

Another reason to avoid feeding dogs scraps at meals is that it reinforces begging. Anytime you reward your dog, you're encouraging them to repeat the behavior they just performed. So, don't give them treats when they beg, bark, or engage in other behavior you don't want repeated. Instead, give them small, healthy treats when they do something you request, like sit or fetch.

Kibble and other bite-sized foods are also perfect for use with the puzzles and other boredom-busters available in our shop. And remember, food is not the only way to reward your dog. Praise and petting are often equally as effective. Work with your vet to craft a custom canine diet that includes a small amount of healthy treats.
